Dr Aryabala Prasad the wife of Dr Anandshiv Prasad, Professor Emritus of Hematology of the University of Detroit and the world renowned zinc specialist, passed away last Tuesday at the Detroit hospital after a brief illness at the age of 94.Her husband passed away only two months ago.
She was the daughter of Justice Bira Kishore Ray,the first Chief Justice of the Odisha High Court.
Aryabala was a student of the Ravenshaw College(now Ravenshaw University), Cuttack.She did her MBBS at the Patna Medical College,Patna and married Dr Prasad soon after her graduation,and moved to USA with her husband in 1951.She did her specialization in Gyaenocology in the United States.She also served in hospitals in different places including Egypt and Iran before settling down in Detroit.After retirement she did private consultation and supported her husband in creating awareness among the practing medical doctors about the importance of presence of zinc in human blood.
During her career she joined her husband in attending medical conferences and public health seminars in different countries like UK,France, Australia,Japan, Russia,Thailand, Singapore and India.
Her daughters Rita and Sheila,and son Ashok were all medical doctors from USA,and youngest daughter, Audrey came from management discipline.Her son, Ashok passed away in 2016 at the prime of his career.
Her last surviving brother-in-law is Barrister Satya Brata Mookherjee,former Central Minister under Atal Bihari Vajpayee.All her brothers and sisters had passed away earlier.
She has been survived by a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
During her life she had made it a point to visit India both Patna in Bihar and Cuttack and Bhubaneswar in Odisha and also Kolkata in West Bengal,almost every year to remain in contact with brothers, sisters,and brothers -in- law nephews and nieces.She also supported poverty alleviation programs in her father's village in Bagalgarh near Govindpur.
